This National Nursing Week we spotlight some of our amazing nurses and find out what makes them so passionate about providing home health care.

Jennifer Huehn is one of our 280 nurses who goes above and beyond to care for our patients. She shares her experience being a nurse.

1. Why did you become a nurse?

Even at a young age I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. I graduated in 1993 and my first job was at a summer camp. I've worked in a doctor's office, the hospital and have been a community home care nurse since 1997.

2. What’s unique about being a nurse in the community?

I feel being a community nurse is very rewarding. We get to interact with the patients and help them during their illness. Being in their home allows the patients to be more at ease. The patients’ families can easily be a part of their care plan.

3. What do you wish more people knew about nurses?

I wish that people knew things that impact them also impact us. In the community we have the continuity of care of the patient and can see them on a long-term basis. Emotionally it can be draining but also extremely rewarding when I can see a difference my care has made.

4. What is the most challenging part of the job?

I feel the most challenging part of the job is trying to balance patient care with paperwork.

5. What is the most rewarding part of the job?

The most rewarding part of the job is knowing that I have made a difference in someone else’s life. Nursing for me is not just a job. Ever since I was a little girl, nursing was the only career that I ever thought about. It’s a lifelong passion of mine to help people in good and bad situations.

6. What patient/family has impacted your practice the most?

There are a few patients who have impacted me. The ones who I can never forget, their stories are ones that I can relate to. Knowing that I have made a difference in their life and put them at ease is something that I remember and am very proud of. Some patients I will always remember, they are a part of my nursing journey. They are the ones who I have learned from, have helped me grow as a nurse and have made me more compassionate and understanding. These patients have made me the nurse I am today.
