Each month we spotlight a Seniors for Seniors companion who shows exemplary care to our clients.

Mary Anne Whittington was chosen as our November Employee of the Month because of the wonderful feedback we get from our clients and their families. Mary Anne is an excellent employee, she is someone we can always count on for last-minute help.

This is Mary Anne's experience working as a Senior Companion:

1. How did you hear about Seniors for Seniors and why did you decide to join the company?

I was told by my daughter that she had heard of a company (Seniors for Seniors) that employed seniors to work with other seniors.

After 43 years of running my own daycare, I felt I was unemployable. I went online and saw the job listing. I thought to myself, I have nothing to lose, so I applied online.

After meeting with Joanne the next thing I knew I was getting my picture taken. When I got back to my car I texted my daughter saying, "holy smokes, I think I just got a job!"

2. What is your favourite companion/caregiver experience or story?

I started working with my favourite couple just before Christmas in 2018. I was so nervous because I wanted to do a good job. Just as I was finishing up my shift I noticed I forgot to dust under the coffee table, so I quickly wiped under the top and out flew a glass globe.

Of course it broke and I figured that would be the last of me. Was I ever wrong! We have become very close and I have to bring new pictures of my grandchildren every time I visit them. They love to hear the latest tales and they are truly a joy to know.

3. How has Seniors for Seniors benefited your clients?

I know for a fact that one of my clients would not be as comfortable as they are without Seniors for Seniors. They have full trust in our work and speak highly of the things we are able to provide for them as well as others. That is what makes being a Senior Companion very rewarding.

4. How has being Seniors for Seniors caregiver enriched your life?

Seniors have given me a purpose to give something of myself to others. I have a strong belief that what you give out to someone will come to benefit you down the road.

Very seldom do I leave a client without feeling better for what I have left them with.
