Dale Heaney, from our Kitchener and Waterloo branch, was chosen as our Seniors for Seniors March Employee of the Month because of her positive attitude and passion for helping her clients.

Here are some questions we asked Dale about her experience being a Senior Companion at Seniors for Seniors:

1. How did you hear about Seniors for Seniors and why did you decide to join the company?

Many years ago I worked for a company that was about to close so all the people working there started looking for new employment. There were a few people where finding new employment would be difficult due to their age. So I started looking for places to help them and I discovered Seniors for Seniors and the many different jobs they offered. I spread the word around that they were hiring. At that time, I told myself that I wanted to join the company one day and eventually I did.

2. What is your favorite companion/caregiver experience or story?

My favourite experience was with a man who I sat with while he was waiting to go into a retirement home, he had dementia. While I was sitting with him, we started playing cards. He actually called me the card lady because he could not remember my name. We usually played a made up game which was a mix between Go Fish and Gin Rummy. I do not know how we developed this new game but boy was it fun, especially when he won (which he almost always did with a little help).

3. How has Seniors for Seniors benefited your clients?

Seniors for Seniors is a blessing for all their clients. They can stay in their homes longer and have a better outlook on life. They are happier with all the attention they receive and still feel in control of their life.

4. How has being a Seniors for Seniors caregiver enriched your life?

For myself, I like people. I get so much satisfaction from being able to help. Being a Senior Companion allows me to feel good that I can help people and make their lives better. It is a very rewarding job - I love working for Seniors for Seniors!
