Many may not understand the ins and outs of depression.

What was once thought of as “sadness” can now be understood as a serious mental condition that does not go away without help. Depression indirectly affects all Canadians at some point through friends, family members or associates. About 20 per cent will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Also, it’s not something you can physically see, for many, only a trained professional can recognize the subtle onset of depression. Science has been able to show that depression doesn’t just start with the emotion of sadness, it’s a complex illness that starts in the brain.
