Andrea Dela Cruz: Program Manager for Mississauga-Halton (Peel office)

Why did you choose nursing as a career?

I wanted a career that was both challenging and meaningful and nursing felt like the natural choice. It’s a complex career that requires the balance of critical thinking and compassion.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the personal satisfaction I receive when I feel I’ve made a difference in someone’s life, whether it’s my contribution in healing their wound or the service I’ve provided to the patient/family when providing palliative care, or helping a patient/family through a difficult situation.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from your patients?

Knowing when to turn on your “tough” and when to turn on your “human” and finding the balance in between.

What’s one thing that only a nurse would understand?

When you’re called to do an IV re-site and the patient has the most perfect veins, you can’t help but think to yourself, “Must be my lucky day, because look at those veins”

What’s your favourite way to recharge?

A day at the spa.
